Bowling at Kappa Karnival

Philanthropy: Chicago Youth Centers

Chicago Youth Centers (CYC) is the largest independent youth services agency based in Chicago.  CYC gives children and young adults in impoverished neighborhoods a chance to thrive intellectually, physically, and emotionally.  Kappa volunteers for CYC at events like Play Day, where we join the men of Delta Upsilon to invite youth from the centers to Northwestern for a day of games, food, and fun.  Every spring, we host the Kappa Karnival, which also benefits CYC.  You can learn more by visiting www.chicagoyouthcenters.org.

Sisterhood

The best part about being a Kappa is the friendships made with other Kappas.  To that end, Kappa works very hard to promote and maintain its close bonds through things like Sisterhood Events, the New Member Retreat, and Kore Families, to name a few.  During Sisterhood Events, Kappas gather together for a simple activity, such as decorating door signs for our new members, or watching an episode of 'Sex and the City.'  At the New Member Retreat, the incoming Kappa pledge class gets an opportunity to share stories and bond with the young women who will soon grow to be lifelong friends.  Kore Families help to bridge the past and future of KKG: each family is composed of a few new members, their Pledge Moms, their Pledge Grandmas, and so on.  A favorite Kappa tradition is the annual Kore Family Scavenger Hunt.  The families help every new Kappa to become more familiar with the older active members as well as more comfortable with the house.

Social Events

Kappas just love to have fun!  We have all kinds of special social events throughout the year, from our annual holiday party at the house to exchanges, where we join with other sororities and fraternities for a night out at a dance club, bar, or restaurant - often in downtown Chicago.  Our date parties, semi-formals, and formals also bring us into the city.  Recent locations include the Palmer House Hotel, Domaine, Dragonfly, Sauce, Life's Too Short, Rock Bottom Brewery, the Cubby Bear, and the Lakeshore W Hotel.

Greek Community Activities

Kappas also participate in lots of activities that encompass the entire Greek community.  In the fall, Kappas join with Northwestern fraternities to host Friday tailgates in the fraternity quads, an NU tradition.  Kappa is always represented in the annual Homecoming parade; in 2003, we paired with Phi Delt to build a "Newlyweds" themed float.  The All-Greek Grill-off and Gone Greek Night are other examples of our interaction with other Greeks.  In the spring, we compete in Greek Olympics and Maysing, and even if we don't win, we still have fun!
